THE WORLD AT YOUR FINGERTIPS

As she stares out into the world, the world kneels in front of her. Who is she? Kumari - the "living godesses" of Nepal are considered a symbol of divinity and reincarnation of Vajradevi, a Buddha. Through secret religious rituals, a Kumari (which means "a virgin girl" in Nepali) is selected among various pre-pubescent candidates from the Newar ethnic group. Currently there are ten Kumaris in Nepal, and nine of them are in Kathmandu Valley. In a predominantly male dominated country, it is impressive how those girls are worshipped with great reverence. Photo credit: @aerawbic #DKTM #culture #livingGoddess #Nepal Yak also called as "chauri gai" is a long-haired bovid found in the mountainous region of Nepal. When you go trekking along the Himalyan trails, you are bound to come across one of these shy but mighty fellow which serve an important part of the life in the Himalayas. Male Yaks are used as means of transportation in higher altitude as can be seen in the picture above, while female yaks provide milk and meat as sources of staple food. Not only that, they also provide high quality wool which are used in weaving tents, blankets, ropes, and clothing. Photo credit: @lakenwhitecliffe #DKTM #Himalayas #yaks #Nepal This performer is dancing to the beats of Nepali musical instrument known as "madal" played by the man wearing a Nepali "topi" (hat) at the back. Dance has always been an integral part of Nepali customs, traditions, and religion. This particular dance is called Kartik Nach which is one of the important tantric masked dances performed to honor "Lord Kumara" for his protection to the community. Photo credi: @sid_mertz #DKTM#dance #culture #Nepal When we think religion and beliefs we do not think pollution, But the cremation site in Pashupatinath Temple is a reason for pollution. Hinduism being the major religion of Nepal, these sites serve as the final destination in the earthly journey of many devotees. Because the ashes and remnants from the bodies are cremated right next to the Bagmati river (since it is considered holy river), the ashes and remnants of the cremated bodies have contributed to the pollution problems. Photo credit: @arbindevsapkota #DKTM #Pashupatinath #Nepal Bamboo swings referred to as "pings" in Nepali, are commonly noticed during the festivities of Dashain celebration. They are built by members of a community and are made of tall bamboo trees fastened together by ropes. It is an exhilarating reminiscence of youth and playfulness. Photo credit: @lerako #DKTM #Nepal Pottery has been a part of Nepali culture for centuries and it is still an integral part of certain villages and communities in Nepal. Beautiful yet delicate ceramic cups, water pots, wine vessels, etc. also serve important purposes in traditional practices. The skills of Nepali potters have been passed down for generations and the beauty of it can be seen in every pieces being made. Photo credit: @bhushandahal #DKTM #pottery #culture #Nepal El Salvador is also known as the Land of Volcanoes. This is a picture of the Izalco Volcano. Between the years 1770 to 1958 the Volcanoe continiously erupted helping oceangoing sailors set their course by the continuous glow from Izalco’s summit, nicknaming it the “Lighthouse of the Pacific.” #ElSalvador #Nature “The Greatness of small things” El Salvador, the smallest country in Central America, portrays its material and nonmaterial realities one figure at a time. Made out of clay, these miniature figures are Ilobasco’s traditional form of art and its main theme is El Salvador’s culture, and its hard working people.
