What you need in order to make change happen in politics
Media mogul Oprah Winfrey told a class of graduating students on Saturday, May 13, to engage with others and live a life of substance when seeking real change.
“I want you to work in your own way to change the world in respectful conversations with others,” Oprah said.
But working in your on way to change the world can be challenging. Here are a few ideas that can help you get started, especially if you’re aiming for a career in public service or politics.
The Freechild Project, an NGO helping students create social change through independent initiatives, has indicated three things youth need to have to succeed in the political arena.
In order to become engaged in politics in the most effective way, young people can conduct action learning oriented activities that allow them to gain credit for their involvement, besides learn about political actions, issues and other realities within the political system.
It means providing young people the needed skills to become involved, which include communication, problem-solving, change management and conflict resolution skills. It also means participating in knowledge-sharing activities designed to build their capacity for powerful action.
Getting inspired by stories, biographies and other sources can help prepare and sustain youth in politics.
