The International Telecommunication Union (ITU), formed in 1865 at the International Telegraph Convention, is one of the oldest intergovernmental organizations in the world. It became a United Nations specialized agency in 1947.

Based in Geneva, Switzerland, as a member of the U.N. Development Group, it brings together 193 member states, about 700 public and private companies and international and regional telecommunication entities known as sector members and associates, which undertake most of the work in each sector.

The ITU is active in areas including broadband Internet, latest-generation wireless technologies, aeronautical and maritime navigation, radio astronomy, satellite-based meteorology, convergence in fixed-mobile phone, Internet access, data, voice, TV broadcasting and next-generation networks.

Its responsibilities deal with the coordination of the radio spectrum's shared global use, the promotion of international cooperation in assigning satellite orbits, the improvement of telecommunication infrastructure in the developing world and the assistance in the coordination of worldwide technical standards.

In November 2006, the ITU Plenipotentiary Conference in Antalya, Turkey, decided to celebrate the World Telecommunication and Information Society Day on May 17, to commemorate the founding of the International Telecommunication Union on May 17, 1865.

This recurrence aims at raising global awareness about social changes brought by the Internet and other technologies as well as helping to reduce the digital divide.
