Chocolate contains large amounts of calories and is high in sugar, but this does not rule out the fact that it can have several health benefits.
Everybody loves chocolate, and if you learn how to eat it moderately, you will get the benefits and satisfy your craving, simultaneously.
Sometimes chocolate benefits differ according to its type. Dark chocolate, for example, is considered to be the healthiest among all chocolate types. But here are several benefits chocolate grants you:
1. It improves heart health. Dark chocolate contains flavonoids that increase blood flow and circulation, and can prevent cell damage and inflammation. It reduces cardiovascular risk along with lowering “bad” LDL cholesterol and blood pressure. On the long term, this helps in reducing the risk of heart disease.
2. It protects the skin. Chocolate contains flavonoids, antioxidants that protect the skin against sun-induced UV damage. By improving blood flow, the skin’s density increases while staying more hydrated. Eating a small amount of dark chocolate before exposing one’s skin to the sun is beneficial and can prevent being sunburnt.
3. It enhances brain functions. Improving blood flow to the brain is another proven benefit of dark chocolate. In fact, this will help someone become more attentive and alert when it comes to doing daily tasks. On the short term, it may be the caffeine contained in chocolate that is helping stimulate the brain.
4. It boosts the mood. Sometimes, indulging in a sweet piece of chocolate can make someone feel less stressed. Chocolate contains serotonin, which is a natural antidepressant, and it stimulates endorphin production, that creates feelings of happiness and pleasure. One hypothesis not yet proved is that chocolate can improve libido.
It is now obvious that chocolate has several health benefits, but one shouldn't eat it without moderation, because sometimes less is more.
