A beautiful green Island: this was Manhattan in 1609. Over 400 years later, the most renowned New York City borough became one of the world’s major commercial, financial and cultural centers populated by 1,5 million people.
The interactive map below shows how the area has changed over a time span of 400 years. It was created by the Wildlife Conservation Society and launched through the Welikia Project. "The goal of the project is discover something new about a place we all know so well, whether we live in New York or see it on television, and, through that discovery, to alter our way of life," reads Mannahatta: A Natural History of New York City.
